28 June 1945 Time For a Bit of R & R

With V-E Day occurring last month, soldiers at Barrackpore are now being allowed some time to rest up a bit.  Locations indicated in the orders included:
  • WP US Army Rest Camp #7, Ranikhet, India
  • WP US Army Rest Camp #2, Darjeeling, India
  • WP Jalapahar Rest Camp, Darjeeling, India
These were all 15-day assignments as a duty station, and thus were not counted as leave. The orders also mentions that TDY payments were not authorized.

Meanwhile, APO 492 took the time for inventory.  Eleven officers were appointed Inventory Officers "for the purpose of inventor[y]ing the messes indicated...".

And one lucky person got 20 days leave to visit Mysore, India. Hopefully it was for good reasons.

Soldiers included in the orders:

20 June 1945 Multiple TDY and Promotions

V-E Day took place May 8 but no orders here in Barrackpore for my relative. The CBI Roundup in Delhi has an article that week that lets soldiers know that while some de-mobilization will occur, most can expect to stay on the job.

Thirty-two soldiers in and around Bengal Air Depot, APO 492, Barrackpore, are affected in today's orders.  Sgt Mann is off to Field Security School, Intelligence Corps (India) for five weeks, while Capt. Bartges replaces Maj Hartman as Medical Supply Officer for the 48th Med Sup Plat (Avn).  Sixteen men are promoted, all enlisted.

PFC Howard Stewart was detailed to the Ice Plant. He'd recently been noted in the CBI Tiger Rag as passing up six cans of beer for 10 rupees!

18 Oct 1944 -- More Mission Support 5317th Air Depot Headquarters (Prov) APO 492

Today twenty-four soldiers were transferred, promoted, or assigned temporary duty. Two enlisted men were sent back the U.S., implementing a previous order entitled "Release of Rotation Personnel".
Two enlisted men from an Overhaul Squadron were sent to Santahar, India with no specific time listed for temporary duty. Perhaps they were being sent out to repair some military machinery. Meanwhile eleven men were promoted (all temp grade).

The affected soldiers were:

11 Sep 1944 -- Mission Support 5317th Air Depot HQ (Prov)

More various assignments published today, including temporary duty for LT. ERIC KORY, "in connection with military matters, not to exceed three days." Twenty-seven soldiers were ordered for various items. Interestingly, the orders typist started using codes which he noted at the top of the order. So he didn't have to type them for each person over and over.  Here they are:

Some order shortcuts

Probably the best item was MAJOR JOHN D. REINDEL, who was granted 20 days rest leave to visit Srinagar, India.
